Controls definition

Agree speed, interlocks and fault behaviour before wiring.

A conveyor control brief should state the intended speed range, local and remote modes, sensor functions, machine-ready conditions and the response to downstream blockage. A variable-frequency drive can provide speed control, but the permitted range must be checked against the motor, gearbox, cooling and mechanical limits.

Guarding and isolation

Treat conveyor nips, drives and interfaces as machinery hazards.

UK HSE guidance on PUWER identifies guarding, emergency-stop devices and isolation as normal machinery safeguards. The final arrangement requires a project-specific risk assessment and conformity work by competent persons; a web guide cannot define the required safety function or guard dimensions for a particular machine.

Guard the hazard, preserve the task

Prevent access to drives, in-running nips, chains, sprockets and hazardous transfer points while retaining safe routes for inspection, cleaning and maintenance.

Provide effective isolation

Maintenance and cleaning methods should identify the energy sources, isolation point, lock-off method and verification required before access.

Validate combined equipment

At a machine interface, confirm that guards, emergency stops and interlocks work across the complete risk boundary rather than stopping only one module.

Cleaning and washdown

Define what is being removed and how the conveyor will be cleaned.

“Washdown” is not a complete specification. Record the soil, cleaning chemical, concentration where known, temperature, pressure, exposure time, frequency and drainage route. Then check belt or chain material, wear strips, bearings, electrical enclosures, joints, hollow sections, access and the approved safe cleaning method.

FAQs

Can a VFD be used to adjust conveyor speed?

Yes, where the motor, gearbox, drive and cooling are suitable for the approved speed range and the line controls are coordinated.

Does an emergency stop replace guarding?

No. Emergency stops are supplementary protective measures and do not replace prevention of access to hazardous moving parts.

Who decides the emergency-stop boundary?

The boundary is defined by the project risk assessment and safety-control design for the combined equipment.

What does washdown information need to include?

Include soil, cleaning method, chemical, temperature, pressure, frequency, drainage and the electrical areas exposed.

Can cleaning be carried out while the conveyor runs?

Only under a specifically designed and risk-assessed safe method. Routine cleaning normally requires safe isolation where access to hazardous movement is possible.

What should be tested at handover?

Test normal controls, interlocks, fault sequence, stop/restart behaviour, safety functions and the approved cleaning and maintenance access method.

Controls, guarding, isolation and cleaning access must be considered as part of the installed conveyor and its interfaces. General guidance can identify the questions, but final measures depend on the actual machine, task and site risk assessment.

Does an emergency stop replace guarding on a conveyor?

No. An emergency stop is a control measure for an abnormal situation; it does not prevent access to nip, trapping, drawing-in or shearing hazards during normal use. Guarding, safe design, interlocks, isolation and working procedures must be selected for the actual hazards and tasks.

The UK Health and Safety Executive explains that work equipment should be suitable, maintained and accompanied by appropriate protective devices, controls and isolation under PUWER. Final measures require a competent project-specific assessment.

What should upstream and downstream machines do when the conveyor faults?

Each connected machine should enter an agreed state that prevents further product entering a blocked route and avoids an uncontrolled restart. The exact response depends on process risk, product position and line architecture, but the signal owner, normal state, fail state, reset permission and restart sequence should be documented before software is completed.

A conveyor fault, blocked product and emergency stop should not be treated as interchangeable events.

How can cleaning access be provided without weakening conveyor guarding?

Cleaning access should be designed around the real task so residues can be reached after effective isolation without routine guard removal becoming difficult or unsafe. Removable or openable guards, lift-out components and access panels may be appropriate, but their design and interlocking depend on the hazard and cleaning method.

The cleaning procedure should define isolation, tools, chemicals, drainage, reassembly checks and who is authorised to return the conveyor to service.

Which safety and hygiene decisions require a site-specific assessment?

Guarding extent, safety functions, emergency stops, isolation, access, cleaning chemicals, drainage, hygienic construction, electrical protection and the boundary with neighbouring equipment all require application-specific assessment. The same conveyor frame can present different risks when its route, product, operators or connected machines change.

General web guidance should therefore be used to prepare questions and evidence, not as a declaration that an installed system is safe or compliant.
